PREVENTIVE DENTAL CARE

Preventive Dental CarePreventative home care is the least expensive and most rewarding form of dental care. Daily tooth brushing is the single most effective way to remove plaque. There are several types of toothbrushes and toothpastes specially made for pets available. We recommend CET seafood flavored toothpaste for cats, and the line of meat flavored pastes that CET makes for dogs. Do not use human toothpaste, as it can be toxic if large amounts are swallowed. Brush the outside of all the teeth with the same circular motion that you use on your own teeth. Pay special attention to the gumline where plaque and tarter tend to accumulate. Remember to make it a pleasant experience for everyone. Praise! Praise! Praise!

Diet can be a factor in the development of dental disease. Soft, sticky foods can contribute to the accumulation of plaque and tarter. Dry diets, crunchy treats, and chew toys, such as CET Dental Chews can help to slow the progression of dental disease.

The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) is an organization that provides an objective means of recognizing commercially available products that meet the pre-set standards of effectiveness in controlling the accumulation of plaque and calculus in dogs and cats. The following products that the VOHC seal in the ‘helps control plaque and helps control tarter’ category.

  • Hill’s Canine t/d Original and Small Bites
  • Hill’s Feline t/d
  • Friskies Feline Dental Diet
